The Humanitarian Award is given each year to a student who has made an active and significant contribution during the year to the general welfare of others, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award is given to the student who has best promoted social justice through service activities and programs as exemplified by the life and work of Dr. King.

This year’s Humanitarian Award and The Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award winner has dedicated himself to social justice, but most particularly, educating students about immigrant rights and the plight of undocumented students in the United States. He has organized and led numerous events, including a viewing of the documentary Papers, educational sessions about the DREAM Act, “Education, Not Deportation”, a workshop at the 2010 GLCA Students of Color Leadership Conference, and a Spring Break service trip to work with the Student/Farmworker Alliance. His involvement in immigrant-rights serves not only as an advocate but also to encourage and train other students to get involved. During his semester off-campus last year, he interned with Sojourners Magazine and has continued to write for them during his senior year.

For the past two years, he has also coordinated the Tuesday Night Dinner speaker forums for Canterbury, the Episcopalian student organization, around the theme of “Justice for All.” Through this, he has brought guests from the Kenyon community and across the country to speak on issues of politics, faith, and justice. As one of his many nominators remarked, “His passion, empathy, and knowledge are contagious. What Marco is doing through education and training is truly inspiring.”
